‘DEEPTHROAT’: On Tuesday Mark Felt, the number 2 man in the F.B.I. during the Nixon
presidency came forward revealing himself as Deepthroat, the
informat who led gave information to reporter Bob Woodward that led to
the downfall of the Nixon administration. I have to confess that my
knowledge of recent US history is not very thorough (as I prefer early
20th century). As the media has been
careful to label him a hero for leaking sensitive information to the
press which I see as a good call as how often the media is known to
jump on the bandwagon and push public opinion. Living 4 hours
from a hotzone and reading the media accounts of things happening in
SK… it is interesting to have this perspective.
Charles W. Colson, who served as Nixon’s “hatchet man” and served seven
months in federal prison for his role in the Watergate scandals, wrote
a statement
on his website. Did Felt go about doing the right way of
exposing the wrongs of the Nixon administration? From a first
glance I would say yes, but hesitantly as I do not know all the details
but what Colson says rings true. Did Felt have no other
options? Was everyone that corrupt? Why did he not go to a
grand jury and seek out an indictment? I look forward to
reading his account.
